PureRated

Faith tag: True Story

  • The Hiding Place

A Dutch family hides Jews, is caught, and learns a hard holiness in Ravensbrück. The audio is intense; PureRated recommends 13+ and does not treat it as background listening.

  • Hidden Figures

Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson do the work that makes John Glenn’s flight possible — while the building they work in is still learning their names. PG language and period injustice; no cynicism. One of the best “watch with teens” films PureRated carries.

  • Chariots of Fire

Eric Liddell will not run on Sunday. Harold Abrahams will not be patronized. Hugh Hudson’s film is about the body as an offering — and about the cost of being known. The beach sequence is famous; the quieter parish scenes are why PureRated lists it.

  • Cabrini

Alejandro Monteverde’s portrait of the first American saint is a film about immigrant New York, tuberculosis, and a woman who would not accept “no” from bishops or mayors. PG-13 for period hardship and illness. PureRated flags it for teens and up; younger children may find the tenement scenes heavy.

  • Jesus Revolution

Based on Greg Laurie’s youth in the early-1970s Jesus Movement. PG-13 for drug use depicted (not glamorized) and some intensity. PureRated recommends it for 13+; it is one of the more honest recent studio faith films.

  • I Can Only Imagine

The MercyMe origin story is about a violent father, a shy son, and the long work of becoming someone who can forgive. PG for thematic abuse (not graphic). One of the most-requested titles in PureRated households with teens.

  • Ordinary Angels

Hilary Swank plays Sharon Stevens, who rallies a Kentucky town around a widower and his daughter awaiting a transplant. Based on a true 1994 ice-storm story. PG, hopeful, and unusually unsentimental for the genre.

  • McFarland, USA

Kevin Costner’s Jim White builds a cross-country team in McFarland, California. Disney’s most underrated recent live-action film: work, family, and the dignity of a place outsiders drive past.

  • Unsung Hero

For King & Country and Rebecca St. James’s parents move from Australia to Nashville with nothing. PG, musical, and unusually specific about work and prayer.
